Saturday 12th March
We arrived in Shanghai a little late at 8:15 as a result of track maintenance and single-line working during the night. Shanghai station is a more modern and spacious one, quite near the city centre.
Following check-in and breakfast back at the Yangtze Hotel we revisited some of the Art Deco buildings for which Shanghai is famous.
Trolley buses get their electricity to power the motors from the overhead cables which like tram tracks dictate where the bus can go. There are points in the cables for changes in direction and these buses follow the old tram routes. These are also duel fuel buses as where there are no electrical cables the catenary is pulled down and the diesel engine takes over.
At The Bund we were able to see across the river to the bistro where we ate lunch last weekend, as the Pudong side of the river is lower than the Shanghai side and so when one is on the road at The Bund the other sides riverside cannot be seen.
The map shows our progress to date by train.
