When the Titanic sank in 1912 and the mini tourist submarine in 2023, Halifax being the closest port was the base for rescue and recovery operations. 150 victims of the Titanic’s sinking were buried in the city’s cemeteries. We took the opportunity to visit the Fairview Lawn Cemetery by means of a Hop on – hop off bus. The layout of the tombstones at is interesting. They are arranged in the shape of a ship’s hull. Most of the grave markers are the same and were paid for by the owner of the Titanic. Some graves remained without any names for a long time. Modern technology has helped to identify those graves and information markers in the cemeteries explain how this came about.

One hundred and twenty-one victims of the RMS Titanic sinking are interred at Fairview. Twenty-nine other victims are buried elsewhere in Halifax; nineteen in the Roman Catholic Mount Olivet Cemetery and ten in the Jewish Baron de Hirsch Cemetery.
